Takes to Succeed?
It’s simple, really. Positive Cash Flow happens when you have more cash coming in than going out.
It’s different than Profit and Loss because it can include incoming and outgoing cash from loans
or savings, as well as the more obvious client income and business expenses that determine your
bottom line. One thing is certain, without creating positive cash flow over time, no profit is possible.
How you do it is up to you, but that you must do it is imperative.
Since my mid-20’s, I have been determined to be an entrepreneur, able to control my own destiny. To achieve the
cash flow necessary to support myself and others along the way, I had to learn to sell pretty much anything from
Tupperware and World Book Encyclopedia to business equipment, cameras, charitable donations, client newsletters,
conference registrations, workshops, and marketing and coaching services.
That skill has allowed me to earn commissions selling other people’s products and to sell the services of my own
companies along the way. In good times, I established credit lines with family, friends, banks and
credit card companies. That, plus my savings, allowed me to invest the time and money necessary to
build my client newsletter business to over $1.8 million in sales before selling to a jealous competitor.
And when I invested in an on-line learning business in the 90’s, and lost everything in a partnership
gone wrong, it gave me the possibility of recovering and moving on to create other successful
enterprises, for which I am incredibly grateful.
I’ve been there; done that, as a solopreneur, in partnerships, working in and operating family
businesses. From a straight sales organization – door to door, retail, telephone sales, exhibit
booths and one-on-one meetings – to a full-blown enterprise with product development,
production, sales divisions, marketing, customer service teams, and both operational and
financial management departments.
This is my life, and I love it. Entrepreneurs are my heroes because they forego instant
gratification to build something better for the future of their clients, employees, families,
communities and themselves. Without these risk takers, there is no progress,
only stagnation.
Am I rich? Perhaps not in gold, but certainly in gratification.
