Progress Has Rewards
Our interior design industry is constantly changing. We are in a very
visual esthetically driven industry. Over the past 40 years in business,
the advance that has made the most impact is technology
– in computers, in the Internet, and more recently in social media.
Interior design is a visual presentation. We have moved away from maintaining a library
of magazines for visual tools, as well as catalogues, reference manuals, and spec binders,
to the use of information online. The way we do things daily has changed dramatically. I
marvel at the detailed computer generated design drawings we can create for our clients
that we were not able to before – space plans, 3D drawings, inspirational boards. This
provides an amazing visual tool to help clients make important decisions, and give them a
simulation of the finished product. Advanced technology has allowed us to do this. It does
however create a challenge in business to continually update programs. Our focus is to stay
in the forefront of our industry and be the best we can at what we do.
The Internet is definitely a well-used tool for visuals, as well as research required to pull
projects together. What a huge resource this has become – I am still amazed at the great
impact the internet has made in the lives of everyone and every industry – thanks to so
many brilliant people in this world. Methods of marketing have also changed with the
onset of social media. It continues to keep growing with more avenues opening up. It is
difficult to imagine what life would be like without social media. It has changed the way
people communicate and build relationships in business as well as in personal life.
One could say there is a ‘bitter sweet’ to changes as technology advances. It replaces jobs
and personal connections. However, this is progress and progress does have rewards. I like
to think of it as “When one door closes another one opens.”

A perfect example happened to me. This is how I built up Jostar Interiors and my fabulous
design team! Technology is not my strong point – design is. Hiring designers and staff
that have the skills required to balance out the needs of the business gives the entire team
the synergy to work together creating amazing results. I am not alone on this journey and
neither are they. They have the opportunity to do what they love doing and share the pride
in a job well done. Progress will continue and so will the rewards!
