How To Be Happy On a Wednesday

Today , I had a good day , and nothing extraordinary happened .
I started my day with time for reflection – and a great cup of coffee . I spent my time doing work that allows me to use my gifts in a way I can see makes a difference . I work with people I enjoy and respect . I left my office at a reasonable hour , and I felt good about what I had accomplished . It was a day that also included pauses to take a walk , touch base with friends and to have a few laughs .
At the end of the day , I ’ m tired , but not depleted . My transition from my work self to my private persona isn ’ t jarring . I have a harmony between my career and life that works for me .
I ’ m in the right vocation and living a lifestyle that fits for me . This balance is what I call “ finding out how to be happy on a Wednesday .” How did I find this harmony ? In my 20s , I was making career choices with an audience in mind . I was more concerned with what my life looked like to this imaginary audience than to my experience of living it .
I tried to solve the question of finding my purpose by fulfilling other people ’ s definitions of success . It was a shortcut that didn ’ t deliver a satisfying life or career for me . I spent a lot of time planning vacations to get through those Wednesdays .
My career and life changed when I began to pay more attention to what I valued . Faced with a choice or decision , I started asking these two questions : “ What ’ s important for me to have , be or do to be satisfied at this stage of my work and life ?” “ Who do I need to become to fulfill my definition of success ?” Sometimes answering these questions honestly means saying yes , sometimes no , and sometimes to wait . I ’ ve noticed the responses change as we change and it takes courage to keep acting on the answers .
Staying true to your vision can be more humbling and challenging than it sounds . We need support to build new skills and strengthen our voices to stay the course . But it is worth it . After all the hoopla of a promotion , or the rush of impressing someone else dies down – here you are again – on a Wednesday .
I coach women who want to thrive at work and build a life they also love . What makes a Wednesday good for you ? Are you living up to your definition of success ?
