The Healing Journey
At Soluna Wellness Centre we take a biopsychosocialspiritual approach to
healing work. That is, we consider the healing needs of the whole person.
Bio refers to our bodies, psycho to our minds, social to our relationships
and environment and spiritual to our spirits. We take an inclusive
approach. It is group therapy that we offer.
We have a multi-disciplinary team approach. Registered Psychologist, Rita Balanko and
Psychiatrist, Jane Carr work together. This offers participants a breadth of perspective and
expertise. One of the outcomes of participating in our program may be that participants gain
confidence in adding other caregivers (individual or group) to their wellness care team, thus
expanding their support network and increasing their access to wellness care. Supporting
individuals to advocate for themselves and their needs is an important part of what we do.
It is a self-referral program. We ask participants to begin advocating for themselves and call us
directly. An intake meeting with Psychologist Rita and Dr. Carr will be booked to determine
if our program meets the potential participant’s needs. If it does, an experience in our Healing
Foundations program will be offered. All therapy is done in person. We do not use email.
Confidentiality is very important to our process. It is hard work. All of our groups are small
and run during the day.
Participation involves a commitment of time and resources. We affectionately refer to this as
‘do-it’ therapy – it is not talk therapy. We practice and hone the skills of boundary setting, using
positive affirmations, gentleness, grounding exercises, self-care, and sitting with emotions.
This is an intrapersonal processing group therapy. It is through a process of going inside,
using skills learned to process emotions and sensations that we promote healthy self-esteem,
assertiveness, and personal power.
Psychologist Rita and Dr. Jane use an eclectic mix of modalities collected over a combined
total of fifty years of work in group therapy. The latest to be introduced is ART, Accelerated
Resolution Therapy (R). ART is an eye movement therapy that allows clients to replace
disturbing images and sensations with positive ones. It was developed by Laney Rosenzweig
and is being used to resolve trauma and other life events.
We are privileged to be able to access funding through Alberta Health Care and other coverage
because of the licensing and training that we have. This enables us to offer this work and make
it as accessible as we can.
We are grateful to those who do come and courageously put in the time effort required in their
healing process. It is an honour to serve.
