and cross-country skiing. Letchworth offers nature, history, and performing arts programs, guided walks, tours, a summer lecture series, whitewater raft- ing, kayaking, and hot air ballooning. Formerly the country home of Letchworth, the Glen Iris Inn has wel- comed guests as a country inn since 1914. It overlooks the magnificent Mid - dle Falls. The dining room, Caroline’s at the Glen Iris, serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily through October 27. It opens each year the Friday before Eas- ter. The inn also operates several unique houses for rent in the park and efficiency units and luxury lofts at the nearby Pine- wood Lodge. The park’s creator was also deter- mined to preserve the region’s rich In- dian lore. In 1871 he relocated the last remaining Genesee Valley Seneca coun- cil house near Glen Iris. After months of planning, Letchworth conducted the Last Council of the Genesee to rededi- cate the Council House on October 1, 1872. No such council had been held for 70 years and none has been since. Letchworth extended invitations to descendants of Indian leaders. Specta- tors included former president Millard Fillmore and a descendant of the famed Indian leader, Red Jacket. After the ceremony, the Indians had a surprise for Letchworth — they want- ed to adopt him into the Seneca Nation, the highest honor they could give him. In a solemn ceremony they named him Hai-wa-ye-is-tah, “the man who always does the right thing.” Letchworth State Park, 1 Letch- worth State Park, Castile, 585-493- 3680, https://parks.ny.gov/letchworth.
