THE KIDDIE GOURMET — by Barbara Blackburn

My Dad ’ s is both a restaurant and a market , with organic produce to fill your fridge and processed condiments to stock your pantry . The restaurant fulfills the Kiddie Gourmet requirements with its stack of boosters and high chairs , plus a kid ’ s menu for those under 12 . Four choices are offered at $ 6.00 each . It ’ s a good deal with fresh fruit and fries . Choices are Spaghetti , Chicken Fingers , Cheeseburger , and Fish Bites .

For dessert kids can get halfpriced gelatos at $ 2.00 instead of $ 4.00 . Speaking of ice cream before the main course , I ’ ll mention that for larger appetites there is a Fish Bowl ($ 15.00 for four scoops ). We shared two super-sized scoops of Tahitian Vanilla and Toasted Almond Coconut Fudge . Since I ’ m a Haagen-Dazs fan , I found this somewhat gooey .
My appetizer could have sufficed for an entree : Ahi Tuna Crisps ($ 14.00 ). These were crisp wontons and seared tuna with Japanese pickled cabbage , wakame seaweed , and sweet soy glaze . I picked up a taste for seaweed in Hawaii , which I have still harbored for many years . Our dad , who often knows best what to pick in a restaurant , chose the Poke Bowl ($ 9.00 ). He chose the salmon to keep company with his assorted fresh toppings . Both of our selections had that Asian ambiance . We could taste soy , ginger sauce , fresh lime , and cilantro .
Also on the appetizer list are Fish Bites ($ 10.00 ), an item on the kid ’ s menu . These are cornmeal dusted pieces of white fish , served with — probably more or less depending on adult or kid portion — Thai chili sauce .

Pizza looked adventurous , with selections from $ 12.00 to $ 15.00 , along with a Create Your Own Pizza , starting at $ 10.00 . On a second visit at a different time , Dad ordered Grilled Shrimp and Pesto Pizza ($ 15.00 ), with a pub style crust , cilantro pesto , roasted tomatoes , olive oi1 , grilled shrimp , and fresh mozzarella . We enjoyed this well orchestrated pizza , with its crust not too thick or too thin , later for another go round .
On that return trip I ordered the Brunch Buffet ($ 13.99 ), held from 10am to 4pm . On weekends , a breakfast buffet starts at 8am . Dinner starts at 4pm . The buffet is rather like Forest Gump ’ s box of chocolates : you never know what to expect . Of the plenteous supply of food , I favored the fried chicken which I paired with the house made buttermilk waffles . There is also an omelet station . The friendly chefs presiding at the steam table welcomed us back with large spoonfuls of each item , making it challenging to get variety and still maintain a neat plate . The brunch combined the favorites of breakfast and lunch , catering to the steak and carb lovers and those who favor some brightly colored fresh vegetables or fresh fruit .
Ending with the complimentary gelato added just the right sweet touch . The only difficult part was choosing one of the many flavors from the freezer case . After enjoying the gelato , we shopped in the market for whatever pleased our fancy , which at the time happened to be a jar of blackberry with Shiraz wine preserves , a bag of barley , another of lentils , and a lemon . We were glad to have serendipitously discovered My Dad ’ s at the corner of Transit and Main .
