Since you are in Finger Lakes Wine County , you might want to stop at a winery or two , even with kids in tow , as the tours are usually pretty interesting and grape juice is offered for tasting to those under 21 . Although for safety I wouldn ’ t recommend bringing toddlers or very young children , as these places are not baby proofed . One winery we visited a number of years ago with our kids was Bully Hill Winery ( www . bullyhillvineyards . com ), which offers fun , interactive tours that even kids will enjoy . Bully Hill has a museum and also an on-site restaurant with an amazing view .
Corning
One of my favorite places to visit is Corning , about a 2 ½ hour drive from Buffalo . While it is possible to go there for a day trip , I recommend staying overnight , so you have more time to enjoy your visit .
The must-see destination in Corning is the Corning Museum of Glass ( www . cmog . org ) one of the top tourist destinations in the state . This museum has thousands of artifacts that represent 3,500 years of glassmaking history . Allow a minimum of 3-4 hours for your visit , although you could actually spend the entire day or more . In fact , your admission ticket is good for two consecutive days !
Three years ago the museum underwent a major expansion , adding a contemporary arts and design wing , which has all sorts of glass arts on display , including some large scale pieces .
Be sure to see one of the live narrated glass blowing demonstrations that take place several times each day . You can even try your hand at glassmaking by signing up for one of their glassmaking workshops ; some are for all ages , while others are restricted to teens and adults . Participants can create jewelry , glass flowers , ornaments , and more . It ’ s recommended that you sign up for these workshops online prior to your visit as they do fill up quickly .
While in Corning be sure to visit Market Street , also known as the Gaffer District ( www . gafferdistrict . com ) a historic four block area of 19th Century buildings filled with unique shops and restaurants . Just around the corner from Market Street is the Rockwell Museum of Western Art , which has the most comprehensive collection of western art in the country .
