At New Explore & More
As Explore & More – The Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Children’s
Museum gets ready to welcome everyone to their new home
on Canalside this Spring they have made every effort to make
their space accessible and inclusive to all players and learners.
They’ve hired a full-time Access and Inclusion Specialist who
is working to create a welcoming and supportive environment
that is fully inclusive.
When you don’t know what’s next, we’re here to help!
Our Vocational Services offer training opportunities
to youth and adults of all abilities who are interested
in exploring the working world.

50 WNY Family April 2019
To help make guest’s visits as enjoyable and engaging
as possible, they have developed customized visual, social,
communicative, sensory, and behavioral supports. These
supports can be found throughout the museum — from quiet
kits and call-ahead accommodations to sensory-friendly spaces,
social narratives, visual schedules, visual/sensory maps, and
more. They hope to prepare families before, during and after
their visit, so they get the most out of their museum experience.
Explore & More is also continuing their much beloved
Au-Some Evenings dedicated to children with autism and/
or sensory challenges. This program allows these children
and their families to access the space when it is closed to the
public. The family can explore the museum in a comfortable
and accepting environment that features fewer guests, light and
sound reduction, extra visual safety signage, and designated
quiet areas that include sensory-friendly quiet kits.
Explore & More will be developing other programs as they
go forward, seeking to collaborate with community partners to
ensure that they are taking into consideration the needs of the
community.
