Oral histories have been called “ the first kind of history .” As described by Susie Dalton , the Heritage Engagement Officer of the Glasgow ( U . K .) Women ’ s Library , “{ Oral histories are } a way of gathering , recording , and preserving a diverse range of personal experiences that generally are not well documented in written sources or traditional history . { T } heir personal nature makes them a great primary source for people wanting to discover more about a certain event or era , providing an insight into the impact events had on the people alive and involved .”
“ Wyoming ’ s people have always been inveterate storytellers ,” Sue Blakey of Thermopolis wrote in our WLM 2016 feature on the festival and its storytelling celebration . “ Mountain men told plenty of whoppers when they gathered at the fur-trading rendezvous . Music and storytelling were common in the Native American tipis , cowboy bunkhouses , farmhand shacks and homestead cabins .” Often without realizing it , the tradition continues . “ Given half a chance ,” Sue wrote , “ today ’ s outfitters , hunters and fishermen will regale listeners with tales about the ‘ ones that got away .’”
“ Stories from the Next Generation ” will feature anecdotes and even some tall tales reflecting continued family histories , interesting incidents and natural occurrences , all types of accounts that tie the Big Horn and now ’ s the time to tell it !
