A wildlife biologist turned photojournalist, Riis has spent a decade documenting the last great migrations of pronghorn antelope, mule deer and elk through the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and Yellowstone National Park, an area that comprises roughly seven million acres of wild land that intersects with private ranches, compounds, highways and towns. With evidence of their annual crossings in the region dating as far back as 7000 years, thousands of these animals move in herds with the changing seasons to feed and give birth. Recorded by strategically placed, non-intrusive wildlife camera traps, Riis’s images show the animals as they cross swollen rivers, trudge up mountainsides, race across remote wind-swept plateaus, 14 Wyoming Lifestyle Magazine | Summer 2018
