The day flowed into hours of gravel roads of varied quality, numerous refills of camelbaks, countless applications of sunscreen, admiration of Karla’s grit, and mild envy over Marina’s smooshies: peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with Fritos smushed into the soggy bread. Shad shined. We had attached a bungee towing system to the back of his bike, and in true Shadstyle, he almost wordlessly pulled his weight and more up countless hills. We’d all start grinding upward and, naturally, spread out a bit, then Shad would drop back while Marina and I pushed on. Then I’d hear them coming: whoomph, whoomph whoomph went their wheels.
