They are always researching and listening for
what Laramie shoppers leave town in search of.
They also continuously make their store new,
fresh and interesting. “Alec loves to change
things up and create a new look,” manager
Kristen Hedley says. “Customers love the
home décor and the new and different looks
he is always creating.” With a smile, she adds,
“Anytime he texts me and says, ‘Wear your
tennis shoes to work today,’ I know we’re in for
an adventure.”
It’s clear when you walk in that creativity is the
lifeblood of The Curiosity Shoppe. On my visit
to chat with Kristen, a table full of candles in
an array of fall scents, white ceramic pumpkins of various sizes and glassware
catches my eye, while a nearby fountain creates a little soothing, white noise.
On another table just past a creative archway reflecting both an autumn feel
and a little spooky Halloween vibe, sits more displays with soapstone cutting
boards, and a cable knit, Heather grey throw. I’m a tactile shopper (much to
my husband’s chagrin), so I have to give it a little test. It is definitely as soft as
it looks, and I’m hatching a plan to help my husband see that it’s his idea that I
must have this for when I read at night…
My favorite selections, however, are those from Wyoming made artisans and
entrepreneurs. While we chatted, Kristen worked on folding a new selection
of Wyoming themed t-shirts from Creative Blue Yonder, a Laramie-based
company owned by Jessica Perry. The Curiosity Shoppe also carries goat’s
milk soap, jams, jellies, seasonings and hot sauces, pottery, glassware, caramels
and fudge, photography and fine furniture (just to name a few items) made by
local, regional and statewide artisans.
Part of the fascinating environment at The Curiosity Shoppe is the building
itself. Located in Historic Downtown Laramie, the 9000 square foot space
was originally three buildings; the dividing lines can still be appreciated in the
antique ceiling. The store was converted to a Woolworth’s in the 20th century
before becoming the Laramie hallmark (pun intended) that it is today.
While Hallmark is certainly a wonderful draw of the store, The Curiosity Shoppe
is also an Alex and Ani dealer, and the unique bracelets have taken Laramie by
storm. Other highly recognizable brands such as Willow Tree figurines and Burt’s
Bees products are joined by their new and growing lines of women’s fashion.
When you’re in Laramie for a UW game, experiencing Laramie’s diverse arts
scene or taking a trip to the Snowies for adventure, drop in to The Curiosity
Shoppe (open Monday through Saturday 10 am – 6 pm and in November
& December, also Sunday from 12-4 pm), located at 206 South 2nd Street in
Historic Downtown Laramie. This creative, living and growing community
icon will have you exploring your curiosities – and be sure to plan more time
