Heartworks , A Crafters Community is housed within a 1909 building in downtown Powell . Previously a jewelry shop ( as well as a church amongst its many previous lives ), the building was renovated from the ground up by friends and family of the charter members . “ It was a true community project ,” Jan Sapp says . They even retained a couple of early 20 th century artifacts found while tearing up the old bathroom , including a Prohibition era , intact whiskey flask that was underneath the bathroom floor !
From paintings , fiber arts , leather work , jewelry , stained glass and kitchenware , to items such as cigar box guitars and handcrafted furniture , Heartworks houses a diverse and fascinating collection to browse through . Personally , I picked up a handmade scarf for my accessory-loving daughter for Christmas ( don ’ t spoil the surprise !), and two pairs of Alpaca fingertip-less gloves for my husband and I . The ladies offered us coffee while we chatted , and an area gardener and artist member stopped by to show off her giant purple cauliflower . ( Check out our Facebook page for that picture !) Shoppers came and left , stopped to say hello and inquire about their favorite items . The hometown , community vibe was palpable , which is something I can say every time I visit Powell ; ‘ Hometown ’ is one of the first words that springs to mind .
For a delightful shopping experience , you must make the quick trip over to Powell when you are visiting Yellowstone . Stop at the Heart Mountain Interpretive Center to learn about Japanese-American confinement during WWII , and the Homesteader Museum to celebrate the lives , entrepreneurship and determination of the Big Horn Basin settlers .
