WLM | people downturn that is affecting the rest of the state. WLM: What is the most interesting Wyoming story you’ve ever written? BS: My favorite story was a series of stories and editorials that we did in 1990, which exposed how the U. S. Government had hired local contractors to dig uranium in Jeffrey City after World War II. These men all contracted serious cancers over the decades and died horrible deaths. With the help of former Senator Al Simpson, we exposed this story and then supported Senator Simpson as he got a bill through Congress that provided a $100 million trust fund to help these folks. Simpson ended up nominating us for a Pulitzer Prize for that effort. That was my favorite story of all time. WLM: What prompted you to create your book series? BS: I have had parallel Wyoming careers in journalism and also in tourism. We have published over four million magazines promoting Wyoming tourism over the decades. Governor Mike Sullivan appointed me to the state travel commission in 1979 and ever since then I have been busy promoting the state’s tourism efforts. In 2007, I wrote a column called Wyoming’s 7 Greatest Natural Wonders. Several folks including former tourism directors Gene Bryan and Randy Wagner suggested, with my publishing background, that I do a coffee table book on that theme. I finally did the first book in 2012. We followed it up in 2014 with a companion book called MY WYOMING.
