of Directors to guide students . All other states must apply to the national office in Washington , D . C ., receive their program book and communicate with their advisors and the national office to see their goals through . Of course that can be done – but when you have a Wyoming director and entity here ready and willing to help you through this process , why wouldn ’ t you want to join ?! As an added bonus , Wyoming ’ s Senators John Barrasso and Mike Enzi and Representative Liz Cheney are all actively involved in the program , participating in the recognition of its award recipients as well as program promotion .
Under the direction of State Director Trista Ostrom , who took the helm in 2014 , the program has continued to grow . One hundred forty-seven medals ( 32 gold medals ) were awarded in Cheyenne in February 2017 , up from 58 medals the year before ( seven gold ). Trista is traveling the state , meeting with new and current participants , checking in on hours earned , following their adventures and applauding their achievements on the Wyoming Congressional Award ’ s Facebook page . She oversees an annual summer retreat , where outdoor work and community service are performed over a weekend , and organizes the program ’ s fundraisers , award ceremonies , Washington D . C . excursion for Gold Medal recipients , and other get-togethers . Her energy and dedication are fueling this program into future growth .
If you don ’ t have a student of this age set , there are many ways you can help . Share this article , the website and Facebook page with your network , and consider donating to the cause . While the Congressional Award program is a part of our legislative branch , funding comes primarily from sponsors , donors and fundraising efforts , with the US Mint providing the medals awarded to the recipients . Each participant pays $ 15 to register , or can request a scholarship to cover the fee .
