WISHING WIRE Volunteer Newsletter| Issue 5 2014 Mia’s Magical Wish for a Faraway Treehouse Seven-year-old Mia’ cherished wish for her very own ‘Magic Faraway Treehouse’ s opens up a world of adventures. Diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia at just two and a half years of age, Mia was confined to hospital and undergoing chemotherapy treatment at a time when she just wanted to be playing and exploring the outdoors. It’s a tough thing for any young adventurer, but Mia had a trusty companion in the form of her favourite book, Enid Blyton’s ‘The Magic Faraway Tree’. Much like the characters in the story, Mia’s backyard was host to an enormous, sprawling tree just waiting to be explored. When asked to name her most cherished wish, there was nothing Mia wanted more than a magic treehouse of her very own! Volunteer Newsletter | Issue 5 2014 With the help of building design company Matt’s Homes & Outdoor Designs, who made the treehouse, and Melbourne Branch volunteers, who decorated it down to the last detail, Mia’s treehouse was brought to life exactly to her specifications. Complete with a purple door, slide, hidden trap door and pulley system, it was a dream come true for Mia! “It’s just amazing, and she wants to spend every spare minute in there,” said her mum Kate. Mia and her brother love playing together in the treehouse – and thanks to her wish, they will be able to have many more Faraway Tree adventures to come! ■ Page 1
