There were 16 teams competing. The 2013 WSD Team included: Lyssa Matsche, Mitchell Perry, Alex Kubiske and Anna Dorst. Athletic Director, Mr. Matthew Eby was able to accompany Academic Bowl Advisor, Ms. Susan Dupor to chaperone. While the students were gone for this event, WSD and family at home were able to follow their progress with a brand new TWITTER (social media) page (www. twitter.com/GUAcademicBowl) or via the WSD Facebook page (www. LEFT TO RIGHT: Mitchell Perry, Anna facebook.com/GUAcademic Bowl). The chaperones were able to post Dorst, Lyssa Matsche, & Alex Kubiske. pictures and give live updates of the matches, as well as share scores. WSD competed against some large Deaf Schools as well as mainstreamed programs. One of the favorite memories of the Bowl was playing against the three year straight National Champion, Maryland School for the Deaf. WSD did very well, in fact, “we were the most hotly contested team against Maryland”, shares Susan Dupor, during the Friday and Saturday matches. Even the Maryland coaches made positive comments about how impressed they were with our students. Maryland School for the Deaf took first place (yes, again!), with MSSD taking second place and Florida School for the Blind and Deaf taking third. Lyssa felt that WSD had an excellent chance of winning next year as Maryland had some excellent players graduating. She also remembered the Maryland coach being nervous with the match against WSD. Anna was disappointed that the Washington Monument was closed but was excited that they were able to see the original “Star Spangled Banner” in the American History Museum. The group also met Drew Robarge, a deaf man, who works at the Museum and offered to give a brief tour. Alex was thrilled to have met Curtis Pride, an African-American man who played baseball with many different MLB teams and is now the Head Baseball Coach at Gallaudet. WSD is looking forward to the 2014 Spring 2013 - 11 Academic Bowl with anticipation.
