French Crêpes & International Sign
Language Night
On Thursday November 1, Harper College in Illinois sponsored an
International Sign Language Night. Seniors and students in the French
class attended the event. Prior to visiting the college, students enjoyed
actively participating in a French cooking demonstration at El Eiffel Bistro
where Frank and Suzie from Nice France guided the students in cooking
crêpes the French way! Both students and staff were amazed at Frank’s
immediate ability to pick up sign language from our interpreter to use in
his demonstration. A French dinner of elegant crêpes was enjoyed by all.

At Harper College, WSD students interacted with
Deaf college students from all across the globe. Nine
nationalities were represented. Students learned about
their sign language, country, Deaf rights or lack of,
culture, and educational background.

Finding Animals
Yoga
Ms. Martens’ class was studying animals and working
on identifying them by picture, written English, and in
ASL. In the middle of the unit, we visited Pet Smart
which had all of the animals that were discussed in
the unit. Flash cards with both pictures and written
English were brought with the students. The students
worked hard on making the connection since the
picture was not an exact replica of what the store
had. The students had a lot of fun in the pet store
and enjoyed seeing dogs which were on a leash walk
around the store.
Heather Martens’ class has begun a new unit in her
classroom. Yoga was the topic of this unit. At the
beginning of class the students would push the desks
aside and pull the area rug into the middle of the
room, parallel to the smart board. Yoga For Kids DVD
would play and the students in the classroom would
follow the children in the lm displaying the various
stretches. Working on posture and relaxing techniques
were being done throughout the lm. The students
showed that they are more relaxed and calm after the
techniques were performed.
