New Staff Jackie Baez By: Maryann Barnett & Lori Lindau Martha Muller Mrs. Martha Muller is the new high school science teacher and is currently in the process of moving to Wisconsin from Washington, Illinois. She attended MacMurray College and Illinois State University, where she also taught in the university high school. Mrs. Muller has experience as a free lance interpreter, educational interpreter and as an educator in the Interpreter Training Program at Illinois Central College. Her husband and two of her three daughters will join her in Wisconsin before the end of the semester. Mrs. Muller teaches Chemistry, Biology, Physical Science, Geometry, Health and Consumer Education. After school, Mrs. Muller enjoys all outdoor activities and sports. Her daughters play soccer and she has volleyball coaching experience. She says she is looking forward to being at WSD full time because she loves teaching. Asked about her rst weeks at WSD and she said that everyone has been helpful, friendly, and very welcoming. Jackie Baez is not a new face to WSD as she has been substituting as both a Teacher and an Educational Assistant since December 2009. However, she is now a permanent staff member and works primarily with our Adapted Education Department as an Educational Assistant. She lives in Madison, but was born in California and grew up in Florida attended Miami-Dade Community College for an associate degree in elementary education, entered Barry University in Miami Shores as the rst ever Deaf student, and earned a bachelor’s degree in exceptional education. She completed her Master’s Degree in Madison in Special Education at Edgewood College. Ms. Baez was immediately inspired by the signing environment at WSD. “ASL, and sign language in general, is the key for communication”. A former Deaf Mentor, she has also substitute taught in both Miami and Madison. Her time and experience working with special education students is extensive. She continues to be both a Philadelphia Eagles and Miami Dolphin fan and says there is no way she will be converted to a Green Bay Packer cheese head! We’ll see! Welcome Jackie Baez. Bethany Walsh Martha Muller HS Science Teacher Winter 2013 - 22 Jackie Baez Educational Assistant Bethany Walsh Educational Assistant Bethany Walsh joined the WSD family in the fall of 2012 in the permanent position of an Education Assistant. She has worked as a substitute Education Assistant for the last two school years. Ms. Walsh is a graduate of Delavan Darien High School and had many classmates with parents at WSD. Ms. Walsh took ASL while in high school, via distance learning, with Mr. Ryan Kelly, WSD Class of 1998, as her teacher. While a student at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, UWM, she studied Art with a wide variety of mediums and continued to take ASL courses. She hopes to continue her studies and possibly focus on working with students with behavior disorders. Ms. Walsh has a two year old son, Conner Jacob, who is learning ASL as his second language. Ms. Walsh says that she loves her job and plans to stay for a very long time. We hope so too! Welcome to WSD.
