High School Boys Basketball
First Half of the Season Record: 1-11
WSD vs. Iowa Deaf - 25-34
The Firebirds opened the 2012-2013 basketball season
with a loss against Iowa Deaf during the annual
Neesam Classic Tournament hosted by WSD. The
team started with many young players who played
hard on both sides of the court. Freshman, Zachary
Henry led the team in scoring with 11 points while
sophomore, Damon Hopp, scored 7 points. Gunner
Hahn led the defense with 7 blocks while Damon had
5 steals to put pressure on the Bobcats. The Bobcats
led the Firebirds 29-13 by the end of the third quarter.
The Firebirds attempted to answer back with 12 points
in the fourth quarter but it was not enough for a win.
WSD vs. Metro Deaf - 64-17
Metro Deaf was the opponent for the Firebirds in the
second game of the Neesam Classic. The Firebirds
disposed of the Cheetahs easily with four players in
double gures. Freshman, Zachary Henry again led the
team in scoring with 17 points of which 9 points came
from beyond the 3-point arc. Junior, Gunner Hahn was
a rebounding machine with 12 rebounds to go with
15 points. Sophomore, Damon Hopp displayed much
leadership by canning 12 points, grabbing 8 steals
and 6 slapping away blocks. Junior, Tanner Evans
played his varsity basketball game by contributing 14
points as well as 7 rebounds. Senior, Bradley Persson
chipped in 6 points in his rst ever, varsity basketball
game. The Cheetahs were overwhelmed by the
Firebirds’ offense and defense from the opening tip-off
to the nal bell.
WSD vs. Minnesota Deaf - 27-47
This was a tough loss for the Firebirds as they
fought the Trojans valiantly. Minnesota’s lead was
only 6 points at the end of the third quarter. The
Trojans’ claim of victory was only determined in
the last quarter when they slammed in 21 points
which squashed the spirits of the Firebirds. Junior,
Gunner Hahn led the scorers with 8 points from the
paint while freshman, Zachary Henry, swished two
3-pointers and 1 free throw.
Winter 2013 - 14

WSD vs. Grace Christian - 27-43
The Firebirds opened their season with the Indian
Trails conference with a loss against Grace Christian.
The Firebirds could not break through Grace’s stout
defense. Sophomore Zominique Walker scored 11
points to lead the Firebirds on offense while freshman,
Zachary Henry, and sophomore, Damon Hopp, added
7 point each, respectively. Hopp and Walker were
two stealing monsters with 5 steals each while Hopp
and junior, Tanner Evans, led the team with 9 and 7
rebounds each.
WSD vs. Mountain Top - 42-73
Mountain Top took over the Firebirds’ home oor by
showing who is on the top of the mountain! Senior
Markiese Mims tried to boost the Firebirds’ leadership
with 17 points on the offense as well as contributing
11 rebounds. However Mims’ leadership was not
enough for a win due to no other players scoring in
double gures. Senior Lennon Morrissey had 5 assists
while Sophomore Zominique Walker had 4 steals.
Freshman Zachary Henry had been steady in scoring 8
points with 6 points coming from beyond the 22 foot
arch.
