Elementary Field Trips During fourth quarter, the elementary students had the opportunity to take a variety of field trips to local businesses. We visited the new Delavan Fire Department where we practiced Stop, Drop, and Roll. At the Walworth County Sheriff’s office, we learned about being good citizens and where you go if you are not. The Delavan Rescue Squad showed us the inside of an ambulance and turned on the loud sirens. We donated dog and cat food while visiting the Lakeland Animal Shelter. At the Morrison Eye Clinic we got to check our vision. We toured Panera Bread and made cookies to give our moms for Mother’s Day. The staff at Piggly Wiggly taught us about safety with food and equipment. The manager at Taco Bell described how food is prepared, cooked and made for each order. We were treated to Taco Bell visors, tacos and even cinnamon twists! We mailed thank you notes at the Delavan Post Office. Students represented WSD well. They asked very intelligent questions. In addition, students learned about a number of types of employment as well as job duties and expectations. Ellie and Zach with tortillas. Future, Dr. Emma Vollmar ? Summer 2012 - 4 Middle School Vocabulary Program The middle school teachers developed a goal to strengthen the students’ vocabulary skills in English. Together, they brainstormed and implemented a vocabulary program last fall. The students meet together every Monday during study hall to learn more vocabulary words, consisting of approximately ten words per week. The students then work on applying the vocabulary words they learned in various worksheets during the week. Tests are passed out on Monday mornings during first period. Students are tested for correct spelling, matching the words with their definitions, and writing the words in new sentences. The teachers also test the students’ accumulative knowledge over time with a test after every fifth lesson. Huge improvements in the students’ vocabulary knowledge have been shown as a result of this goal.
