Deaf Community Connections
EDITOR’S NOTE:
WSD aims to develop the whole child: academically, culturally, linguistically, socially, emotionally… In this issue the various writers
have highlighted at least 4 main areas of outreach and role modeling with the Deaf Community both at large and within our school
wide Deaf Community. Highlighted are stories about: Teen Getaway Weekend, the Academic Bowl contest, and the annual Deaf
Santa visit. In keeping with the Bi-Bi Philosophy, students participated in the Mystery Night in the Library.
Mystery Night in the Library
Nell Fleming, the school librarian, set a goal for
the 2011-2012 school year to engage the middle
school aged students in a literacy activity that
would motivate them to read more. Nell also
wanted to provide an environment of fun and
discovery in the library rather than procedures
and overdue fines.
To do this, the WSD library hosted a special
night for the fifth thru eighth graders on
October 20, 2011. It was centered around the
theme of, “Mystery Night in the Library.”
Highly energetic and eager to achieve, Nell,
went right to work creating this amazing
adventure to get the students involved with the
reading process and the library.
The students were engaged with this special
event through playing mystery board games
such as Clue. What was more, The Mystery
of ZSD, a video, was shown to the students in
ASL. The students had to come to a conclusion
regarding who actually stole the money from
“Z” School for the Deaf. Scott Kendziorski,
our “resident” ASL storysigner, signed a story,
The Dark Days of Hamburger Halpin which
included a Deaf character.
The students responded well and were very
attentive to the activities. Nell has plans to
provide exciting adventures for our middle
school aged students every year in the fall.
