Deaf Awareness Week 2011 Theme: Deaf Business Owners EDITOR’S NOTE: WSD aims to develop the whole child: academically, culturally, linguistically, socially, emotionally. In this issue the writers have highlighted at least 6 main areas of outreach and connection with the Deaf Community: trips to the Deaf club houses in Delavan and Madison, visiting Deaf businesses, celebrating International Sign Language Day, participating in the college fair, and getting spooked at the SLAD Haunted House. In keeping with the Bi-Bi Philosophy, students participated in the 9/11 Remembrance Service amongst other activities. Deaf Studies Trip to Madison WSD art teacher, Susan Dupor, describes: De’VIA Deaf View Image Art. Emma Vollmer presented her Deaf biography on motor-cross champion, Ashley Fiolek. For Deaf Awareness Week 2011, the middle school and high school Deaf Studies classes went on a trip to Madison to increase their awareness of Deaf clubs and Deaf business owners. Karla Gunn, the bilingual specialist at WSD, arranged the trip. The theme for Deaf Awareness Week this year was Deaf business owners. Elementary Activities A visit to the Delavan Deaf Club, presentations on Deaf Visual Art and Deaf Biographies, and International Sign Language Day kept the elementary students busy during Deaf Awareness Week, September 19th – 23rd. WSD’s Bilingual Specialist, Karla Gunn planned the week’s activities and helped teachers and students prepare their unique presentations for Friday’s celebration of International Sign Language Day. Thanks to Karla for organizing another week of awesome Deaf Awareness activities. Elementary students check out the remodeled Southern Lakes Association for the Deaf Clubhouse. Ellie presents her Deaf biography on Lynn Ray Boren, the Gallaudet University and Deaf Olympic Women’s Volleyball Coach. Fall 2011 - 8 The Madison Association of the Deaf clubhouse was first visited by the 8th grade, freshmen, and senior students. The students listened to a presentation given by Darrell Roby, a WSD alumnus (1989), focusing on the history of the Madison Association of the Deaf (MAD). Currently, the clubhouse is going through renovations to become an even better facility for the Deaf community in Madison. Ann Hathway, a WSD alumnae (1953), also presented on how her husband, Jack Hathway (1952), assisted the Deaf Club in purchasing the current building. The students enjoyed looking through MAD’s pictures and artifacts.
