Firebird Sports by Chris Woodfill High School Football 8-0 The WSD football team had a perfect season with 8 wins and no losses. WSD also won the fourth consecutive 8-Man National Football Championship after defeating Oklahoma Deaf who were also in the hunt for a national championship as well. Over the past four years, WSD has accumulated a remarkable 27-2 record. Arthur Hart tied the 2004 pass completion record held by Roman Drymalski with 14 pass completion in a game. He also broke the game passing yard record with 202 yards. Taylor Koss led the team in rushing with 751 yards in 105 carries for an average of 7.2 yards per carry and in pass interceptions with 5 snatches. Arthur Hart attempted 81 passes and completed 48 for a total of 633 yards. Dylan Laux led in receiving with 15 catches for a total of 252 yards. Lennon Morrissey and Taylor Koss led in solo tackles with 34 each. Lennon also led in tackle assists with 21. Jose Zepeda-Amador had the most quarterback sacks to his name with 3. WSD vs. Minnesota Deaf 36-2 Senior Merrick Frei rushes for a First Down. WSD demolished Minnesota Deaf with the score of 36-2 when the Firebirds hosted the season opener. Minnesota scored a safety during the third quarter to earn their only 2 points. WSD scored 20, 8 and 8 points during the first three quarters. Senior, Taylor Koss ran for 2 touchdowns during the first quarter. Arthur Hart ran for 2 touchdowns, one in first quarter and another in third quarter. Merrick Frei caught a 5 yard pass to score a touchdown in second quarter. Arthur Hart attempted 13 passes and completed 9 for a total of 87 yards. Taylor Koss rushed for 75 yards in 16 carries for an average of 4.7 yards a carry. Jose Zepeda-Amador also rushed for 29 yards in 9 carries for an average of 3.2 yards a carry. Lennon Morrissey and Merrick Frei caught 3 and 2 passes for 22 and 57 yards respectively. Freshman, Zominique Walker solo tackled 10 times during this game. WSD vs. Stockbridge 32-8 In a cascading fashion, WSD gained momentum throughout the match against Stockbridge to defeat them in a definite manner. At half-time, WSD led with a score of 8-0. During the third quarter, WSD picked up 8 points. During the fourth quarter, WSD outscored Stockbridge 16-8. Taylor Koss either caught a pass or ran for all WSD’s 4 touchdowns in this match. During the first quarter, Taylor Koss caught a 48 yards pass from sophomore, Arthur Hart to score a touchdown. During the third quarter, Taylor Koss ran for 5 yards to score a touchdown. During the fourth quarter, Taylor Koss ran for 13 and 15 yards respectively for 2 touchdowns. Taylor Koss also rushed for 145 yards on 21 carries for an average of 6.9 yards per carry. Sophomore, Jose Zepeda-Amador rushed for 43 yards on 9 carries for an average of 4.8 yards per carry. Furthermore, senior, Taylor Koss had 8 solo tackles and a pass interception to his credit. WSD vs. Oneida Nation 56-44 In an exciting and hotly contested match, WSD clawed back from the behind to defeat Oneida Nation. By the halftime, WSD led Oneida by 30-28. At the end of the third quarter, Oneida led WSD by 44-36. However, WSD found its inner firebird and ignited something within themselves to go on a 20-0 run against faltering Oneida. During the first quarter, Taylor Koss ran for a yard to score the first touchdown of the game. Arthur Hart ran for 43 yards and had a 67 yards kickoff return for the other 2 touchdowns during this quarter. During the second quarter, Arthur Hart threw for 8 yards to Merrick Fred for a touchdown. During the third quarter, Arthur Hart threw a 64 yards pass to Taylor Koss for a touchdown. During the pivotal and comeback fourth quarter, Taylor Koss scored all 3 touchdowns. The first one was a 2 yards run. The second one was a 23 yards pass thrown by Arthur Hart to Taylor Koss. The final one was an exciting 41 yards interception return. Taylor Koss and Jose Zepeda-Amador had 47 and 45 rushing yards on 13 and 10 rushes for an average of 3.6 and 4.5 yards respectively. Seniors,Dylan Laux and Merrick Frei caught 5 and 3 passes for 71 and 31 yards for an average of 14.2 and 10.3 yards respectively. Lennon Morrissey had 12 solo tackles to help out the team.
