A unique “ East Meets West ” exhibition by local artist Sushil Kumar Datta is now underway at the Williamson Art Gallery in Birkenhead .
The exhibition by the former textile designer looks at his early days in India , his journey to the UK and his career as a creator of fabrics and wallpapers for various major companies .
In the period featured - the late 1960s and 1970s - people were turning to India for inspiration in art and patterns from the country were all the rage . Sush was one of the vanguard designers who carried that forward , arriving in London in 1963 .
The vivid colours of his work and the swirling intricacy of the designs are a bright reminder of the boldness of that period . The exhibition , which runs until July 2 , demonstrates Sush ’ s joy in bringing the best of Indian style to the West .
79-year-old Sush , who went on to teach in Bolton and Bradford , has previously had exhibitions in London including at the Design Centre and the INPRINT show organised by ICI and the Textile Council .
Sush , who has two children and three grandchildren , lives near the Williamson Gallery with his wife . He is also a qualified yoga teacher .
