HOW TO CREATE THE PERFECT
EN SUITE BATHROOM AND
ADD VALUE TO YOUR HOME
Creating an en suite bathroom in your home doesn’t just bring
the one obvious benefit, it gives you a triple return… value,
convenience and resale appeal.
And, even if you don’t think you have the space, never say never
because there are methods and styles to suit every house.
“Customers’ needs are varied so we always find bespoke solutions,
depending on the age and size of a house,” says Inspired Bathrooms
& Kitchens Managing Director Mike Lloyd.
“People should never be fearful that giving up a bedroom to add
an en suite will mean losing value on your house because it won’t.
In fact it will enhance the value of the property because it will
make it attractive to an even wider market.
“When families buy a new house today, one bathroom is often
not enough because they want their own space, so even if you
have the best house on the road, if you’ve only got one bathroom
your house isn’t as appealing. Add an en suite and the sell-ability
increases.”
Mike says there are three main options when it comes to
accommodating an en suite bathroom.
With a modern construction, dividing stud walls can simply
be physically moved to create the necessary extra area within a
bedroom.
Or, where that’s not possible, existing rooms can be carved up
to reduce the size of one bedroom in favour of another without
taking away the overall bedroom count.
Alternatively, if the bedrooms are large enough and services allow,
you could create an en suite within the existing space by adding a
bathroom ‘pod’ in a corner, by running one straight along a wall
or to the side of a chimney breast.
“A corner en suite will usually be 50p-shaped and, if space is
limited, you can add one by taking just 1.5m off each wall,”
explains Mike.
“That steps you into a shower, with a toilet to your left and basin
to your right.
“If you go across a wall, you can slice off as little as 900mm in
depth and 2.4m in length from the room, we have a galley-style
layout and we incorporate a sliding pocket door so you don’t have
a door swinging in and out.”
Crucially, Mike says the key is blending the en suite into its new
surroundings.
“We do it gently and with consideration, so for instance we
match skirting boards and coving or we’ve even created one
behind existing built-in wardrobe doors so you step through the
wardrobe and into the bathroom!
“Inside, the en suite can be as modern or traditional as you want it
to be, but outside it should look like it’s always been there.”
