BY KATE KINGSTON
Kate Kingston, Managing Director of Kingston Shaw, an award winning
interior design company with offices on the Wirral, London and Dubai,
shares with us the latest trends for creating the perfect home.
SCREEN TIME IS FAMILY TIME!
We have noticed a trend at Kingston Shaw recently, and it has crept
up on us quite by stealth, none of us saw it coming and yet here we are
and here it is the most requested room we are asked to design is now a
cinema room!
It seems that the cinema room has replaced dining rooms as the area that
families get together in and spend time with each other, albeit they are
actively pursuing an activity at least they are together, so what makes a
perfect cinema room? What should you consider if you are planning a
media epicentre for your own home?
3. Now we can talk about
acoustics. You could go the
whole hog and get a specialist
team in to acoustically
perfect the sound in the
room and from spilling in
to the rest of the house or
you could use a few clever
tricks to improve the sound
quality in the room. Firstly
purchase the best speakers
you can afford, secondly, use
materials on the walls like
cork and pay attention to
the floor, carpet is great for
muffling sound but if you
want an all round enveloping
sound consider leather floor
tile.
4. Blackout. If you have windows in the room, then you are going
to need black out blinds to maximise the definition in the room
from the visual equipment. Black out blinds can be fitted on side
guides to eliminate any light seepage and can be manual or electric.
If you are using curtains then I would also suggest that you use a
blind behind to ensure black out.
1. Presumably you allocated a room? So the first thing you need to do is
decide what size screen you want, this will determine whether you go for
projection or TV system.

5. Accessories. Finally ensure that you have the right accessories
in your newly minted cinema room. A snuggly cashmere throw,
side tables and or trays to put glasses and snacks on and cushions
you can never have too many cushions!
2. Now you can plan your layout around the screen! What type of
seating do you want, day beds, sofas, armchairs, all work well and each
create a different vibe.
