“Your Hometown Dentist”
It's hard to believe that we're into October now. And before your know it, the kids will be upon our doorsteps trick
or treating for, hopefully, their favorite candy. Even harder to believe is that there's only two more months of my
theme of "The non-traditional dental (new) year". The response has been so good, I kept the early 2018 theme right
through the entire year! It has been fun taking a look at the new versus traditional treatment choices we have. And
now we are going to finish the year with a few non-traditional tools we have to make dentistry better for the patient.
So, since it is the month of Halloween, I'm going to tie in my theme to the season. It'll be a stretch, but here we go!
I had my favorite short dialog with a patient today. He's a young fellow in for a couple fillings. After a couple minutes
at the beginning of the appointment, I sit back and say, "Lets give that a few minutes to get comfortable". He then
turns to my assistant and asks her, "Is he going to numb me up?" To which, she answers, "he just did". I love it! It
feels just as good as hitting a game-winning jump shot in my men's league basketball game, because I have just
eliminated one of the most feared parts of a dental appointment....the discomfort of an injection.
I attribute the success to a great little machine I have called the Wand It is a syringe-free anesthetic delivery system.
It allows me to give numbing anesthetic that is virtually unnoticeable. I still use a high-quality "traditional" topical gel
anesthetic first, but after that I let the Wand work its magic!
It is one of my favorite non-traditional tools that I wouldn't work without, and I look forward to sharing another gem
of a technology with you next month.
You thought I forgot, huh? The "trick" is doing an dental injection and the patient not
knowing it. The "treat" is that the patient doesn't have to fear that part of the dental
appointment anymore!
