Computer Tips : For Us Seniors

Computer lingo is constantly growing and it can be difficult to keep up with all the different words if you are not a regular visitor to the tech world . We have listed a few basic terms concerning computer and internet security that might clear up some things for some of you .
What is malware ? Malware is short for ‘ malicious software ’, and similarly to ‘ spyware ’, is a term to describe unauthorised programs that are downloaded to your computer and cause disruption or damage to software or hardware . Sometimes , malware is designed to use your computer ’ s ‘ resources ’ ( such as memory ) and other times it is simply designed to create an unpleasant experience . Malware can be accidentally downloaded through spam emails , or when downloading files from untrustworthy websites , such as file-sharing websites .
What is spyware ? ' Spyware ' is a generic term used to describe unauthorised programs that monitor activities on a computer – such as internet surfing habits and browser activity – through the installation of software without the knowledge or consent of the user . Although sometimes innocuous , spyware is predominantly malicious . Beyond monitoring computer activity , spyware programs can also collect various types of personal information and can interfere with user control or alter computer settings .
What is phishing ? Phishing is a fraudulent attempt to secure sensitive information , such as personal identity and credit card details , while masquerading as a legitimate operation or individual . Websites that have been ‘ hijacked ’ for this purpose include PayPal , eBay , MSN and Yahoo !, to mention just a few . However , hackers can also ‘ hijack ’ personal email accounts to attempt to trick the recipient into opening the content .
What are Viruses ? Computer viruses are one of the longest and well-known of computer pests . They are essentially files or mini programs that can ‘ sneak ’ onto computers within other files downloaded by users , with malicious intent — ranging from significantly slowing down your computer , to spying on or even controlling your computer , and extracting sensitive information for personal gain .
What is antivirus ? Computer viruses are malicious programs that are designed to damage your computer or compromise your security . Before using the internet , it ' s important to make sure that your computer is protected by antivirus software . Without it , it ' s quite easy to download a virus unintentionally .
Antivirus software will protect your computer by preventing an attack by or detecting and removing any viruses . Some antivirus software can be downloaded for free from the internet – for instance , AVG and Windows Internet Security . Other types , such as Norton or McAfee antivirus software , have to be paid for with an annual subscription .
All antivirus programs have to be regularly updated , as new viruses appear on the web on a daily basis .
What is identity theft ? Criminals commit identity theft by stealing your personal information – that is , your name , address , date of birth , bank account numbers , passwords and so on – and then pretending to be you . This is fraud .
When using the internet , it ' s very important to take precautions to protect your identity details .
Online fraudsters can mimic the company details and emails from trusted companies to hide their identity , so be vigilant ! Scam messages will often imply a sense of urgency for you to act quickly . This might be to call a number included on a text message , a request for personal information , or banking details and security credentials .
Scam messages even encourage you to open links or attachments . This will open a fake website where you will be asked to login to your bank account for example . The fraudsters then use these details to access your account and steal your money .
