The Wiregrass Seniors Travel Group went to Key West!
Our Key West Trip was a hit and it went down as one
of our all-time favorites! The weather was perfect and
our group was outstanding. We started our journey
visiting old friends and meeting some new faces. You
could feel the excitement in the air as we loaded up
and began our run to the southernmost point of the
United States. Many of our travelers had been to South
Florida, but only a few had made it all the way Key
West. So this was a bucket list trip for many and it
did not disappoint.
For those of you that have traveled with us you know
one thing we do well is EAT, and this trip was not
exception, beginning with one of our favorite places
to eat at our first lunch stop. After we had filled our
bellies and stretched our legs we loaded back on
board and continued south. Making our way to Boca
Raton, FL where we stopped for dinner. This was no
ordinary dinner; it was a modern mix of American,
Asian, seafood with an oyster and Sushi bar. Most of
our group had never eaten Sushi, but this gave ev-
eryone a chance to give it a try, and for the most part,
the sushi was a hit. Road weary, we made our way to
our in-route hotel and then a few of our group
decided unwind with a walk on the beach.
On day Two, we made our way to the Everglades
National Park where we enjoyed an airboat tour in
the Everglades. We spotted rare birds, exotic plants,
and yes, even a few alligators. After the airboat, our
group was treated to a wildlife show where one in our
group, did her best to turn a frog into a prince by
giving it a big old kiss. We were given an opportunity
to hold an alligator, and several in our group took it.
Bright and early on day three, a private trolley picked
us up at the resort and whisked us out on a guided
tour of Old Town Key West. We learned about the
people and events that created and shaped Key
West into the whimsical free spirited city that it is to-
day. We then toured the Key West Shipwreck Mu-
seum and learned about the Atocha and other ship-
wrecks recovered in the Florida Keys. After that some
of us enjoyed time in Mallory Square and on Duval
Street, while other went back to resort to lay ocean-
front by the pool and relax.
That evening, we all gathered together and boarded
a boat for a sunset dinner cruise. As we watched the
sunset in this tropical paradise, our group listened to
live music and danced the night away (There was
even a conga line at one point). After arriving back at
the marina, some of our group, we will called them
the “Key Lime Bandits”, made their way over to the
pie shop and grabbed some of the best chocolate
covered frozen key lime pie on a stick in North
America. It might also be the only chocolate covered
frozen key lime pie on a stick in North America.
On day Four, we made our way back north, stopping
for lunch and shopping while listening to live music in
an open air waterfront market. After checking in to
our beachfront in route hotel, our evening started with
a millionaires row cruise through the waterways of Ft
Lauderdale. As we cruised we, had a view of multi-
million dollar homes and yachts of the rich and
famous. Our cruise took us to a private island where
we had a delicious dinner. After dinner our group
was front and center for the country’s oldest running
variety show. We danced and sang and laughed our-
selves silly. Some of our group even took the stage
to take part in the show. with the comedian and the
Tahitian dancers. I would elaborate, but what hap-
pens with the travel group, stays with the travel group.
We grabbed a quick bite for lunch then traveled the
Overseas Highway. Getting a glimpse of some
dolphins on the way. As we neared the lower Keys,
we watched out for the infamous road side Iguanas.
We spotted many ranging in size from a few inches
to three feet long. The bus would roar and cheer as The next morning we were headed back to reality,
