PARK & RECREATION CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS IN THE WORKS! Senior Activity Center Renovation Project A significant aspect of the Parks and Recreation Department’s offerings is its Senior Services Division. The system consists of a Senior Activity Center located off Jefferson Street that provides a wide variety of programming and services aimed at meeting the needs of seniors in the community. In Summer of 2014, the Parks and Recreation Services Department launched a Feasibility Study for the future of the Activity Center. The purpose of the Feasibility Study was to develop strategies in partnership with the community to understand unmet needs, key operational issues, as well as provide recommendations toward improving programs and services as they relate to best practices, industry trends, emerging needs and community goals. The Feasibility Study produced a two-phased approach for short term capital improvements and a long-term concept plan. Following this recommendation, Phase I concepts were presented at a community Open House, the Senior Advisory Commission and Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission meetings and finalized with approval at the City Council meeting on October 18, 2016. Since then, City Staff have been working in earnest to plan for a 2019 construction start for Phase I. A full closure of the Senior Center during the construction period has been recommended to expedite the project and provide significant cost savings. In preparation for the closure, staff is taking important steps to help mitigate the anticipated impacts to the various users of the Senior Center during the construction period. Toward this aim, staff has reviewed the master facility schedule and proactively planned for this transition period by reserving other city facilities to be used during the construction period. Additionally, staff has taken a proactive approach to project communication, including discussion with contract instructors and facility renters to determine options for relocation and provide consistent project updates to City governing bodies, and more.
