LAWYER DISCIPLINE • A lawyer was admonished for violating Rules 1.3 and 1.9(a) of the North Dakota Rules of Professional Conduct regarding diligence and duties to former clients. The lawyer failed to make timely filings with the Answer and a Supplemental Motion and also failed to request extensions for those filings from the district court. After the lawyer had been permitted to withdraw from representation during a status conference, the lawyer continued participating in the status conference and sent the district court an “amicus” letter afterward that explained how to handle the case, which was contrary to his former client’s interests. • A lawyer was admonished for violating Rules 1.3 and 1.4 of the North Dakota Rules of Professional Conduct regarding diligence and communication with clients. The lawyer failed to file an Answer to a Summons and Complaint that sought damages against the lawyer’s client. The failure caused a default judgment to be entered against the client. Further, the lawyer failed to communicate with the client after assuring that the default judgment would be addressed.
