University appointment
T
HE University of Winchester
has appointed Alan Lovell
as chair of the Board of
Governors.
Educated at Winchester and
Oxford, he qualified as a chartered
accountant and has spent most
of his career in industry, including
spells as chief executive of
Costain, Dunlop Slazenger and
Jarvis. More recently, he was
involved in renewable energy,
including waste-to-energy, tidal
and a carbon, capture and storage
project. He is now chair of the
Consumer Council for Water.
Alan was High Sheriff of
Hampshire 2010-11. He has been
a trustee of the Mary Rose since
2007 and having led the appeal
for the new museum, was elected
chair of the Trust in 2015. He is also
a trustee of Winchester Cathedral,
chair of the Blue Lamp Trust, and
chair of Hampshire Cultural Trust.
Professor Joy Carter, vicechancellor at the University
of Winchester, said: “It’s an
exciting time of growth for the
University. Alan’s experience and
expertise are an asset, particularly
considering the planned
development for West Downs
which will continue to grow our
role as a cultural and knowledge
centre for the city.”
Alan succeeds former British
diplomat Richard Wilkinson.
Parking trial
W
INCHESTER City Council
is trialling a new method
of paying for parking
in Colebrook Street and St Peter
Street car parks.
One machine in each car park
has been converted to accept
credit/debit card payments which
also includes new contactless
technology. The other change is
that customers no longer have to
pay up front for the time that they
think that they might be staying for.
On arrival, visitors will need to
insert their credit or debit card
into the machine and key in their
vehicle’s registration number. At
the end of their visit, they simply
insert the same card into the
machine again and it will then
calculate the duration of the stay
and charge accordingly.
The new system still produces a
pay and display ticket with a tearoff reminder portion; it will also
record the time that the credit or
debit card was inserted, along with
its associated vehicle registration
number.
