Financial Advisers…
the intimate outsiders
I
T’S not all about qualifications,
but building, maintaining
and managing relationships
according to Georgina Wright, a
Chartered Financial Planner with
Abbotstone Financial Solutions.
Georgina helps people plan
financial solutions tailored to
current and future needs, which
may evolve with life stages or
unexpected changes.
In 2012 legislation was
brought in increasing the level
of qualifications required for
Financial Advisers before advice
can be given. Georgina views
this as good, but added that
soft skills or a ‘bedside manner’
cannot be assessed.
“In the last few weeks we
received the news that one of
our clients passed away. We
are fairly high up on the list of
people to get in touch with after
relatives, as the estate of the
deceased’s needs to be valued
and the death registered with
providers.
“We are only human and in
many cases have known our
clients for some years and
planned for this eventuality.
These events may not be wholly
unexpected, but may be sudden.
When the family makes the
call to us, we have to retain our
professionalism in dealing with
their financial affairs, but also
remember this is a sensitive
time and respect that they are
grieving.
“We know our clients well,
both their financial and personal
affairs – such as their state of
health and how they wish to
leave their estate – sometimes
in more detail than next of kin,
although we are generally not
invited round for Christmas
dinner. We are the intimate
outsider.
“My role is not only about
financial planning now and for
the future, but also about being
personable and building a longterm relationship. We are with
our clients during the good times
and the bad.”

Station Approach
D
evelopment of the Station Approach area
of Winchester has moved forward after
Winchester City Council confirmed its
commitment to development proposals which
would bring new offices, shops, homes, parking and
public spaces.
Cabinet agreed, in principle, on a preferred
architect to take forward the Station Approach
development.
Leader of Winchester City Council, Stephen

Godfrey, said this sent ‘a clear message to
Winchester businesses and residents that the
council is determined to deliver the economic
benefits of this development and ensure proposals
are right in terms of architecture and design’.
The appointment is subject to further advice
on legal, financial and design issues (due to be
considered as Winchester Resident Magazine was
going to press).
