As a society we should put more support in place for young people, families and those with mental health issues. Music is a great way to encourage people, yet one of those subjects which seems to fall off the curriculum list. “Society needs people to step up and when I have a good idea, I work hard to carry it through. They’re a mix of charities and I want to use my time in office to raise their profiles.” First elected to the council in 2010 (then re-elected in 2014 and 2016) Jane has been highly involved in the development and organisation of The Worthys Festival, a popular week-long biennale celebration of village life. At Mayor-making she said: “It is such an honour to be chosen as the 817th Mayor of Winchester, and it is difficult not to feel overwhelmed by the sense of history – all those 816 former Mayors standing behind me in a long line, wondering what sort of a job I’ll make of it – and it’s the first time ever we have had three lady Mayors in a row.” Reflecting on her role a few months in Jane is getting to know more people and organisations, but ever grateful to the residents of The Worthys ward for electing her as one of their three local representatives. “We should all feel proud of our city. England’s ancient capital and seat of King Alfred the Great really is the perfect English city on the edge of the South Downs National Park. “Winchester really does combine cosmopolitan elegance with rural idyll. And it’s not just our tourist information office that thinks so. Winchester has again this year been voted the best place to live in the UK.” mayorofwinchesterscharities.co.uk www.residentmagazine.co.uk 15/07/2016 11:29
