About WIN
During some of DC’s darkest years, when the city held the title "murder capital of the
U.S." and the Financial Control Board took control of DC, a group of clergy including
Rev. Joseph Daniels, Rev. Lionel Edmonds, Rev. Darrell Macklin, Rev. Susan Flanders,
and Rev. William Bennett felt compelled to act. Washington Interfaith Network held
its founding action on May 28th 1996 at Metropolitan AME Church with over 2,000
multiracial attendees from 55 congregations located all across DC. WIN’s founding
agenda included affordable housing, education, jobs, and public safety demands.
At the time of the founding many questioned whether WIN would be a flash in the pan or have staying
power. Twenty years later, we are proud to say we are still here and still acting to make DC a better place.
A detailed listing of all the important efforts WIN has led, or in which it has had a hand, would require a
book. In this short booklet, we hope to capture just a small picture of WIN’s many accomplishments to date.
