In the month of August, I have taken part in a variety of activities that have kept me busy. I began the month at the Crawford County Fair. I hosted an agronomy contest for youth on the Friday of the fair. I felt this was a great way to introduce the 4-H members to a judging opportunity that would help them with plant and seed identification. It was great to see the kids participating in and enjoying the contest. I was also able to help with a couple different activities at the Inter-State Fair in Coffeyville. I helped with the 4-H foods judging and also assisted with the livestock judging contest. Both events went very smoothly thanks to all the teamwork from several members of our district.

My programming efforts have also been vivid. Keith Martin and I acted as local agricultural tour guides for noxious weed directors from across the state. Since Southeast Kansas varies dramatically from western Kansas as well as other parts of the state, we were directed to provide an insight to the local agriculture. The weed directors’ meeting was a great way to highlight all the diversity of Southeast Kansas. Some stops on the tour included Big Brutus, the KSU research station in Columbus and also stops around Pittsburg. Other programs that I have been working on are the Women in Ag meeting at the end of the month and a trapping school at the end of September.

Field visits have also remained steady for the month of August. Some of the common issues have included sugarcane aphids in grain sorghum, podworm control in soybeans, aquatic weed control and plant identification and control. I have enjoyed meeting with producers and helping to solve issues on their operations.

As fairs and summer activities are winding down, I have enjoyed seeing the teamwork and collaborations taking part within our district. Our district is enhanced by the all the many strengths and talents of our staff. I have valued the time working with our team this summer.
