ne of my activities in early August was judging plant science exhibits at the Crawford county Fair near Girard, and the Interstate Fair in Coffeyville. It is an honor to judge exhibits for 4-H and open class, but I especially enjoy working with the 4-H exhibitors. I know that the 4-H participant and his or her parents have worked hard together on their projects (some of the projects were outstanding)!

My big event for August was assisting the Wildcat District horticulture judging team at the State 4-H Horticulture Judging Contest in Manhattan. The event was held on Saturday, August 18 at Throckmorton Hall on the K-State campus. I drove six team member and Christina Beason, horticulture judging team coach, up to Wamego on Friday, August 17, for an overnight stay (including late evening practice) at the Wamego Inn. On Saturday morning it was a short jog from Wamego to Manhattan for the contest – we needed to be there around 9:30 a.m. The Wildcat District teams were all refreshed, excited, and ready to win! And win they did! The Wildcat District Senior Team 1 captured 1st place honors and will be representing Kansas at the National Junior Horticulture Association Horticulture Judging Contest in St. Louis. Now we have our work cut out for us getting ready for the national contest!

My other scheduled activities: Wednesday morning (7:40 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.) radio shows on KGGF 690 AM in Coffeyville on August 1, 15, 22 and 29; Wildcat Wednesday Show on KOAM TV on August 8; news article, September Lawn Fertilization; pre-recorded radio spot – Extension Minutes Reports (Fall Gardening, Bed Bugs, Lawn Seedbed Prep, Plants in Landscape Design and Seeding a Fescue Lawn) and Ag News Reports.
