ebruary’s big event is club day. This year Montgomery County Club Day was held at Caney Valley High School. There was a great turnout of youth considering there were several other youth going on that day. Twenty five youth and all members of Fawn Creek 4-H Club will have the opportunity to attend Regional 4-H Day. Events at club day range from public speaking to musical ensembles. Extemporaneous speech is an event that is specific to Montgomery County and is not offered at Regional Club Day. Youth draw a topic, related to 4-H and have 20 minutes to prepare their speech. They are allowed one notecard to outline their talking points. The older youth like this contest because they don’t have to prepare in advance but they still learn some good speaking skills. The clubs do a great job of making county club day fun. Clubs bring snacks and common areas are full of youth practicing or playing while they wait their turn.

I was on the radio this month to promote upcoming 4-H events and Montgomery County 4-H. We also discussed some of the school enrichment activities our office has been doing. Barbara, Heather, Jeri, Michelle, myself and master foods volunteers completed two Bread in a Bag workshops with elementary students in Independence and Cherryvale. This was my first experience with bread in a bag and it was great to see how much the students loved it!

This month was also my first official meeting with the Montgomery County 4-H Fair Board Association. Fair planning is already in the works for both the fair board and myself. Fair book editing is underway and it is a great way to learn about the events at our fair. I look forward to working with this fair board and learning more about how the fair operates. I have visited Riverside Park staff and introduced myself. They are very willing to help Montgomery County 4-H and I look forward to working with them as well.

Independence High School held a technical career day at the end of February. I set up a both for the K-State Research and Extension. Jeri and Barbara both provided me documents and event

fliers to take with me. There were several hundred youth in attendance and a lot of local technical
