Southeast Area FCE Recognition Day

Serving as an advisory to our county Family and Community Education (FCE) units is one of the tasks of Wildcat District Family and Consumer Sciences Agents. We assist with things like monthly County Council meetings as well as local and area events unit members are involved in.

A recent event we assisted with was The Southeast Area FCE Recognition Day held on May 10, 2018, which recognized members for their many community activities and accomplishments. The main speaker this year spoke on “The Harvey Girls”, exploring the job duties and working conditions of Harvey Girls from 1876 to the early 1950’s. Harvey Girls were single women recruited to work at restaurants that sprang up along the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad line.

FCE members from each of the area counties assist with this large, yearly event in various ways basedon a rotation schedule developed by our Area Specialist. This year was Montgomery County’s year to provide table decorations and door prizes. Due to the link to the railroad, I assisted our unit members in decorating the tables with model trains and memorabilia. In addition, I purchased pots of colorful flowers which we dressed up with foil and twine and awarded to door prize winners to take home and transplant and enjoy throughout the summer.
