Sensible Snacking – Final Labette Health Knowledge at Noon for 2017

"I

’ve learned something new every time I’ve come, and feel like I’m now making better food choices,” remarked a participant in our December Labette Health Knowledge at Noon program. While another commented, “After attending several of these programs, I am working on choosing healthier carbohydrates for my meals.”

The December Labette Health Knowledge at Noon was titled “Sensible Snacking” and nearly all in attendance had attended one or more of the three previous sessions. I think returning participants attests to the quality of and value placed on these events which are a result of a partnership between Wildcat Extension District FCS and Labette Health.

Most of the class involved participants reading labels and packaging, and learning to use those tools to make more healthful snack choices. According to participant surveys returned, 95 percent of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that they planned to practice new skills as a result of the program and intended to make at least one healthy change in their eating habits. Actions or changes planned included: keeping healthier options on hand, eat better snacks, and do better at reading labels.

Comments regarding “what I have learned” included:

--To keep attending and learning more.

--That it is very important to read what is in the foods I eat.

--Take time when shopping to allow myself to read labels thoroughly and carefully.

--To look at all info and try to find a healthier option

--To watch the serving size on each package

--Drinks (juices) should have fiber to be a good snack.

--To check for sugar and fiber on labels

--Naturally occurring sugars are best and highly processed foods are not so good.
