anuary is typically a month to plan and get things kicked off. I always enjoy getting plans made and setting things into motion. It is also a time to help 4-H members set some goals and help them try to reach goals already set. I did two letters of recommendation for a couple of seniors that have applied for state 4-H scholarships. Time will tell if these deserving members will be selected.

Members also prepared their Kansas Award Portfolio’s (KAP’s) for Area screening. Wildcat district had two books selected to move on to state competition. Jordan Corley, Wilson county member had his dog book selected and Cara DeTar, Montgomery county member had her sheep book selected. Jordan has already asked for help with the video interview they have to do so I will help him with that over the next few weeks.

Questions about club days and what events to enter have come into the office the past few weeks. Entries are due on the 29th and it looks like we will have some strong contest. I did my first Wildcat Wednesday segment and talked about club days. I do not think most members appreciate the value of doing talks, demonstrations and a model meeting, until they are much older.

We have also been invited to participate once a month at the Neodesha after-school program and taught our first session. Thirty-three second and third graders learned about soil formation, erosion, and then made dirt dessert. I had several 4-H members help with this as well. The weather was nice so we went outside and “played” in the dirt.
