arch has been a busy month full of activities that have benefited the residents of the Wildcat Extension District. I have been involved in several producer meetings and youth programs. In regard to producer meetings, this month we hosted a Women In Agriculture meeting in Parsons. We had a great turn out and a variety of speakers that provided lots of useful information to our women ag producers. I also worked with area Farm Bureaus and other extension units to host a Land Values meeting. K-State economist, Mykel Taylor gave an excellent presentation on current land values. In addition, I provided a cheese making program to the Montgomery County Family Community Educators (FCE) group. This was a fun morning as we made mozzarella and ricotta cheeses.
This month has also been full of youth programs. Jacob, James and I provided a gardening program in each of the four counties during spring break. I discussed compost with the students. Jacob and I also presented to a group of middle schoolers and a group of high schoolers for the Block 22 activities. We discussed gardening and potted pansies. Local greenhouses and business were generous to donate the pots, soil and plants for our activity.
I also presented a youth gardening lesson at the Coffeyville Library. This month’s topic for my youth wildlife program was insects. Katie and Jacob both gave presentations to the kids.
I have also been working with the Southeast Research and Extension center to start a wildlife food plot study. We have worked out a plan and have the location for the study to take place. We have a cool season plot and will be putting in a warm season plot. For the cool season plot, we have a mixture of crimson clover and oats. For the warm season plot, we will be planting soybeans, peas and millet. This will be a great study to use for future producers meetings.
