arch blew by and 4-H activities are picking up! This month several of our youth attended Regional 4-H Days in Chanute, Kansas. Regional 4-H days includes Wildcat District, Southwind District, Cherokee and Woodson Counties. It is a great opportunity for the youth to meet other 4-H members, get new ideas, and further develop their skills. Our agents were responsible for getting judges and monitoring rooms during the event. Montgomery County also held their annual Spring Break Sewing Camp this month. Fourteen youth in the county participated. On first day, youth learned about wool, tools, and the importance of terminology. Then they moved on to making a variety of projects including pin cushions, pillows, pillowcases, skits, dresses, and pajama pants. Youth come prepared with their own projects to work on and the volunteers provided assistance on cutting out patterns and sewing! I was also on the radio this month to talk about 4-H events and to tell the community thank you for their continued support. Events like sewing camp would not happen without our great volunteers and donated supplies!
Spring is also a time to be preparing for the upcoming summer months! I have been working on the fair book for the Montgomery County Fair and the Interstate Fair and Rodeo 4-H section, fair programming, and summer camps! Planning is underway for hosting Techniques of Tailgating at Discovery Days in Manhattan and for hosting Cedar Bluff 4-H Camp in Coffeyville. Earlier this month, I went to tour Cedar Bluff campgrounds and see what options we had for this year. I found out that the fire pit and seating was built by the Busy Beavers 4-H Club many years ago. We are excited to get that area cleaned up and re-implemented back into our 4-H camp at Cedar Bluff!
Other events that happened this month were was the 4-H council meeting and several project meetings! I’ve sent the state trophies for meats judging and skill-a-thon off to be engraved from the district teams’ successful year in 2017! Practices for judging teams have started up again and we have great participation. If you know of youth that would be interested in one of our many judging teams please have them reach out to their local office to be put in contact with a coach!
