Wikwemikong Ice Fishing Derby - Feb. 11, 2017

Big water and big money are what makes this derby stand out. Taking place on Manitowaning Bay on Lake Huron at Bayside Resort, this event runs from 8 a.m. to noon. The quarry is rainbow trout and there is a tagged fish worth $10,000. A second tagged fish is for a pimped out ice hut. This prize tops $3,000 and features a towing sled, hut, sonar, TV, fishing supplies, cooking supplies, gas auger and more. There are about 500 pre-drilled holes, tickets are $100, and includes a dinner of trout. Holes are determined on a first come, first served basis. Early bird ticket buyers get their pick of hole(s) first. Money raised is a boon.

“Money goes to help cultural programming,” Wikwemikong Tourism Manager Luke Wassegijig said. “It helps with festivals, workshops and events. People get to come to this derby and experience Manitoulin Island and see what we have to offer in the winter.”
