EFFECTIVE LURES FOR
WALLEYE
“
It is not always easy to determine which lures are best for catching your target fish . So I put together a list of the best offerings to tease these fish . I have placed these in three distinct categories to help better understand when and where to use them . by Patrick Campeau
SHALLOW WATER
Walleye usually become more active in the dark . They frequently choose to move to structures or shallower bays . To foil them , I opt for the following selections :
1 . Northland ’ s Puppet Minnow - This imitation of a minnow works wonderfully when forced to move upward on a 15-20 cm axis , then let it descend to the abyss . As it drops it will swim around in a circular pattern . www . northlandtackle . com
2 . Ice Jig J50 - This 5.7 cm Williams metal lure allowed a fisherman from Ontario on Lake Simcoe in March 1999 to become the new world record holder of ice-cold walleye with a trophy of 8.05 kg ( 17.12 lbs ). It twirls downhill and turns up . www . williams . ca
3 . Golden Shiner Rattlebait - When you instill the action of a yoyo to this incredibly realistic reproduction from LiveTarget , it generates quite a sound thanks to its loud rattles . The silver / blue version is a particular favourite . www . livetargetlures . com
4 . Rippin ‘ Shad - This version has a flattened muzzle that increases its vibrations when pulled up . Tints 20 and 61 , Glo Perch and Glo Tiger Shrimp , have caused several predators to react to my presentation . www . northlandtackle . com
5 . Macho Minnow - This 1 / 12 or 1 / 8 ounce metallic jig , with a holographic dress , has a unique shape that allows it to sink like a prey in trouble . An articulated tail that dances to the rhythm of jerks adds to the realism of your inviting presentation . www . northlandtackle . com
6 . W30 Williams - Where the use of live bait is allowed , cut off the head of a minnow . Remove the hook from the spoon and insert the minnow head onto the shaft of the treble and reinstall . This way , you don ’ t have to constantly reapply . www . williams . ca
DEEP WATER
When walleye huddle along an escarpment , in a pit or channel , you must be able to present your lures in the heart of the action .
7 . Buck Shot Rattle Spoon - This is one of my favorite artificial lures . Offerings of 3 / 8 , ½ and ¾ ounce sink quickly into chasms . Their sound chamber and their reflective hues do not fail to attract attention . www . northlandtackle . com
