Gearing Up
One of the first questions we asked , is how to pack for a hunt on Maui ? After all , little more than a swimsuit , shorts and a couple t-shirts would be required for the balance of the trip . Like any hunt , determining your requisite gear list involves checking seasonal weather patterns . Hunting in August , we were warned of the consistent hot and dry , drought conditions , so cooler clothing was in order . Even still , protective apparel would be a necessity . Goats can be found on open hillsides , but they can also be seen in thickly wooded cover that can , and often will scrape skin , snag and grab clothes during a stalk . Bottom line - choose your clothing wisely . Long-sleeve shirt , pants , hat , and boots are recommended . As far as camouflage goes , anything with a broken pattern will work . We opted for Sitka ’ s newest subalpine pattern . We each wore long sleeve shirts ( Ascent and Core Hoody ) so that our arms were protected and timberline pants , mostly because they have heavy padding for kneeling on the sharp lava rock .
Choice of footwear is equally important . With plenty of jagged rocks , good ankle support is imperative . A beefy approach shoe may suffice , but the risk of turning an ankle is ever-present . Wearing a good leather hiking boot is recommended .
Variable terrain presents plenty of opportunity to sit and glass . Be sure to take a good binocular , either an 8x42 or 10x42 is recommended . We brought our Swarovski Optik EL Range in 10x42 and it worked very well , both for viewing and rangefinding . For backup , we took a small Bushnell G-Force

DX Arc . Ideal for bow hunting , it is accurate from 5-1,300 yards and compensates accurately for steep angles .
Aside from clothing , footwear , and optics , we took our Hoyt compound bows – basically the same rigs we hunt deer with back home in Alberta . Airline and state regulations accommodate straightforward travel with archery equipment . If you choose to hunt with a firearm , contact TSA and your airline carrier or cruise line directly for upto-date information about traveling with firearms . Upon arrival , you have a short window of time to visit the Maui Police Station in Wailuku to register your firearm . It is recommended that you contact the Maui Police Department prior to your arrival for current instructions , information and firearm registration hours .
