wild guide : plan for success
DUE DILIGENCE FOR SUCCESS Equally important , planning for a successful hunt always requires due diligence with permissions , equipment and practice . Regardless of how long you ’ ve known a landowner , it ’ s always prudent to reconnect well before the season opener . For me , this is in July or August . Touch base to reactivate your permission to hunt for the current year and that all rules or stipulations related to your hunting activities are understood . Putting up stands or ground blinds well ahead of the time you plan to hunt is important . We often disrupt the area , making noise and leaving human scent when we do this . Vacating for several days allows things to settle down , scent to dissipate , and it gives the deer some time to get used to any imposition we ’ ve left behind . One of the most critical , yet surprisingly overlooked due diligence steps we must take , involves going over our equipment . If our bow , rifle , or other gear isn ’ t in good working order , it ’ s unrealistic to expect a positive result during our hunt . It only takes a few minutes to go over scope screws , bolts , or other actions on your rifle . Sighting in for the specific grain-weight and bullet configuration you plan to hunt with is imperative . Follow similar steps with your bow , arrows , and broadheads to make sure nothing is loose or in bad repair . Spend time at the gun and archery range , first making sure that you ’ re dialed in , but also practicing . Today ’ s high-tech compound bows are precision shooting instruments . They must be tuned . That means in order to shoot accurately timing has to be precise , centershot must be true , the arrows must be paired properly with the poundage you are shooting . I ’ m a big proponent of shooting a lot with a rifle , but it ’ s even more critical with archery . Muscle-memory plays a big part in making any shot count . The biomechanics of drawing , anchoring , aiming , releasing , and following through with any shot should be second nature . Part of planning for success involves making these steps natural and fluid until you no longer have to think about them . Do this , and success will follow .
Planning for a successful deer hunt involves practice . For archers , nothing beats shooting at a 3D target .
