wild guide: 36 commandments of moose hunting SCENT CONTROL 14 It is imperative to control your odours and the best way to do this is to find a fresh scrape and roll in it. With my scent camouflaged in this way, I have been able to touch moose and provoke a multitude of bucks. There are also a number of dominant male synthetic urine scents on the market that reproduce these odours well. 17 Wild Guide STALKING 15 The clothes you wear must be clean and dry, because a wet garment increases its smell. If you use urine odours or certain flavours of fir, spruce, etc., use minimal quantities as these products may have an adverse effect on mature males with experience in areas where there is high pressure. . Fall 2017 16 You must constantly check the trajectory of the prevailing winds so that your scent, feared and hated by this king of the forest, doesn’t cross it’s nose. This will create greater chances of seeing a beautiful specimen come to you without suspicion, following a well orchestrated staging. 17 In rainy weather, I advocate walking by imitating a couple of moose, because they are less likely to hear our movements. It is the same in windy weather, but in addition, there is a strong probability that they can not hear our vocalizations. Take advantage of this opportunity to move about in a quiet manner, stalking your prey like a wolf. I thwarted my biggest buck in Quebec, with the bow, at less than seven meters by moving in that way. 18 Stalking moose through their habitat is by far my preferred approach. Just remember, we do not move through the forest tracking these beasts as if we were hiking. You must mimic the behavior of this moose which will require constant pauses while taking a relatively slow pace. Calling while moving will add realism to your strategy. 19 Cervids have very high auditory acuity. According to some guides, they might hear the sound of another moose eating leaves at over 300 meters. It is therefore very important to fix all the objects we carry in the backpack, rifle sling, etc., so that they do not emit unwanted sounds. Use black electrical tape to neutralize these noises where needed.
