Lack of Information about Family Violence, Support Services & Legal Rights
The majority of service providers (22 of 23 or 96 %) stated that CALD women generally have limited
knowledge of the concept of ‘family violence’ under Australian law and their legal rights as well as
available support services.
It was observed that CALD women generally find it harder to navigate the system and to access help
from external agencies because they may not know that help is available or they may be aware that
help is available but not where to go and how to access it. It was noted that newly arrived women
were particularly lacking in an understanding of their legal options such as Intervention Orders, how
they are obtained and implemented.
In many countries of origin there are simply no equivalent services for women and their first
knowledge of these types of services, particularly legal services, is the information they are given
upon first arrival by migration services. It was noted that whilst migration services often provide a lot
